What Are Yellow Diamonds?
Also known as canary diamonds, yellow diamonds occur when a small amount of nitrogen gets trapped inside the stone’s structure. The more nitrogen it has, the yellower it becomes when blue light passes through it.
It’s important to note that white diamonds with certain impurities may be assigned a “yellow” color grade. Fancy yellow diamonds are, however, thoroughly yellow.
White diamonds typically have greater sparkle (due to their cutting method, yellow diamonds are typically cut to keep color saturation at a premium.
Treated vs Natural Yellow Diamonds
Most colored diamonds are treated with irradiation or “high temperature, high pressure” (HPHT) to increase their hues. A natural, fancy yellow diamond, however, is exceedingly rare – and far more expensive than a white diamond of a similar size and grade.
