How to Choose a Beautiful and Comfortable Engagement Ring

Choosing a comfortable engagement ring is rarely the first intention when it comes to this important step in your relationship. It doesn’t matter if you buy alone to surprise your soulmate, or together with them as the next thoughtful stage of your story. When you start looking, the focus goes on the appearance of the ring – sparkle, size, style. The question of comfort comes last – if it comes up at all.

Interestingly enough, people instinctively think about comfort when choosing wedding bands. But somehow, that same logic rarely applies to their engagement ring – the piece they’ll be wearing along with the band. That is why too many people end up leaving their engagement rings home more often than expected.

Appearance matters because this ring is a symbol of the first serious promise for a future together. But as experienced jewelers, we at Jaume Labro studio encourage people to bring the same mindset to choosing an engagement ring. Part of that means asking yourself: what will it feel like on your finger in 6 months?

Today, we are going to share a few tips on how to choose an engagement ring you’ll love to look at – and actually wear.

Why Comfort Gets Overlooked with Engagement Rings

In order to choose the best ring, it is worth understanding why comfort rarely comes up when buying the engagement ring. Choosing this piece is an emotional experience, and it’s mostly a visual one – after all, vision is our dominant sense. So, it’s not surprising that when we are in a showroom or visiting a website, we are instantly drawn towards bigger stones, higher profiles, and elaborate, intricate settings. We feel almost as if choosing an instantly impressive engagement ring reads as a bigger, more confident proof of our love.

But beyond the visual impression, there’s another reason to choose a ring that isn’t quite right for everyday wear, and that’s the assumption we will “get used to it”. We presume that this is a special ring, a ring that we’ve never worn before, so it’s okay if it doesn’t feel natural at first. And yet most people buying wedding bands have never worn one before either, but comfort is always a part of the conversation. So, even though choosing the engagement ring is a truly exciting process, it is worth remembering to get into a calmer, more practical state of mind before getting swept up in the search for the most stunning ring.

Cathedral settings, like the one pictured on this iconic Van Cleef design are among the most recognizable engagement ring designs. Beautiful as they are, their height can make them tricky for everyday wear.

4 Things That Make an Engagement Ring Uncomfortable

Now that we know why we are drawn to engagement rings that may not be the most comfortable fit for us, let’s look at the four main reasons an engagement ring is uncomfortable to wear.

Setting Height

We are flooded with images of engagement rings – on billboards, in magazines, breakdowns of celebrities’ rings on TV shows, reels and TikToks. The most common thing all these designs share is their height. Engagement rings with high settings like domed solitaire or cathedral setting are quite popular, because these settings lift the stone higher, maximize its brilliance and make it appear larger. And if you want your ring to turn heads, that’s exactly the point. However, a high setting like a cathedral, for example, catches everything – clothes, hair, and even furniture, which can make you leave it at home most of the time.

Sharp Edges and Corners

In recent years, we have seen a rise in geometric engagement ring designs. Angular shapes, princess and marquise cut stones paired with thin bands, and even knife-edge band profiles have become increasingly popular because they make the engagement ring look tailored and contemporary. However, knife-edge band profiles rub against neighboring fingers. Marquise cut diamonds with unprotected tips are prone to chipping. And any design with sharp edges or corners is prone to snagging. As experienced jewelers, we believe geometric shapes can be stunning. However, it is worth considering whether such designs will suit your everyday life, or whether you should save them for special occasions.

Prong Style and Placement

Another thing that can make an engagement ring impossible to wear is some prong settings. Prongs (also called claws) are an element in many stone setting styles. Claw settings are often chosen because they hold the stone securely, but also because they allow more light to reach the stone from multiple angles and make it look even brighter and clearer. However, there are different styles of prongs and some of them make the ring a nightmare to wear. Even on low-set engagement rings, loose, sharp, or simply poorly finished prongs snag on fabric, hair, skin – pretty much everything. This is not only uncomfortable, but it can also be dangerous.

Band Width and Balance

Engagement rings typically have narrower bands than wedding rings, partly because this makes the stone look larger. However, the thinner the engagement ring, the less it will sit tight. Thin bands tend to spin around the finger, and sometimes can even slip off and fall.

Poor balance is affecting how a ring sits. A top-heavy ring will rotate all the time the stone will often press and rub in the fold between your finger and palm. Besides being uncomfortable, poor weight distribution causes the ring to slip off more easily. It goes without saying that if your engagement ring rotates or slips off constantly, you won’t be wearing it, active lifestyle or not.

Which Are the Most Comfortable Engagement Rings

You don’t need to sacrifice the look of your engagement ring for the sake of comfort. There are many design features that ensure a ring is both easy to wear AND stunning.

Lower Settings

Choosing a low setting is one of the most effective ways to improve comfort without compromising on beauty. Tension and bypass settings, for example, keep the central stone as the star of the ring without adding too much metal and allowing the light to reach the stone. Bezel settings, which have been enjoying a well-deserved popularity, protect the stone and sit closer to the finger. For a bold look and maximum comfort you can even choose a ring with a flush setting where the stone is leveled with the band.

Settings That Maximize Brilliance

A pavé or halo setting is often used to highlight a smaller or lower-set central stone. A bar setting along the whole band doesn’t even need a central stone as the ring is one bright sparkling masterpiece. The invisible setting is another way to create maximum sparkle. It allows many small gemstones to be arranged into any shape, making them look like a single seamless surface of shimmering light.

The Right Ring Profile

The band profile is a feature that always comes into the conversation when choosing wedding bands. This rarely happens with engagement rings, which is surprising. Finding the right ring profile can immediately improve the comfort of any engagement ring.

For engagement rings with thinner bands, we recommend avoiding round profiles because they can make the ring slip off your hand or rotate. If you prefer engagement rings with slimmer shanks, it is worth trying on a D-shaped, slight court, or double comfort ring profile.

If you are looking into contemporary engagement rings with wider bands, keep in mind that a flat profile makes the ring bold and edgy, but might not be the most comfortable option. For wider shanks, the comfort fit, flat court, and low D-shaped profiles are often the best choice for everyday wear.

Note: If you choose a wider contemporary design, make sure to consider how it will sit alongside your future wedding band.

Bespoke Engagement Rings

The best way to ensure you get a comfortable engagement ring is to have it custom-made for you. An experienced jeweler can meet all the specific requirements to create a ring that fits you like a glove while remaining absolutely head-turning. The Mokume Gane engagement rings by Jaume Labro Studio are a natural example – their organic beauty relies on the uniqueness of the pattern rather than height or protruding elements. The colorful metals intertwine in a one-of-a-kind pattern that is simply stunning on its own. As GIA-certified gemstone specialists, we use high-quality diamonds and gemstones when creating our engagement rings. However, we make sure the pattern highlights and harmonizes with the settings and the overall design of each piece.

One-of-a-kind designs like our Koa Engagement Ring can’t be tested in advance. But you can try to find the closest match available and wear it for a few days to see how it fits.

How to Test if an Engagement Ring is Comfortable

Your daily life is more physical than you think – even if your work doesn’t involve manual labor or extreme sports. Even things like typing, cooking, exercising, gardening, or carrying bags can reveal the engagement ring you were mesmerized with in the showroom isn’t as comfortable in real life. Many people think that they will take their ring off only when they need to, but if you find yourself taking it off half the time, then probably at some point the ring will remain in your jewelry box forever. Here is how to find out if an engagement rings is comfortable before you commit:

Consider Your Hand Anatomy

Most people wonder if a ring will look good on their hands. However, the shape of the fingers and knuckles affects how a ring feels just as much as how it looks. When choosing the right engagement ring for your hand, consider finger length and shape, as well as the knuckle size, to ensure the ring not only looks flattering, but is comfortable too.

For example, while almost every engagement ring design looks good on a slender hand with long fingers, if the band is too thin the ring will rotate and can slip. Wider bands can make a hand with large knuckles look balanced and the finger appear slender, but if the band is too thick or the profile is not right this can lead to swelling. If you are not sure what type of ring is the best for your hand, an experienced jeweler can give you valuable advice.

Wear It For a While

The best way to test a ring design is to wear it longer than a few minutes in a showroom. While it isn’t possible to take an actual engagement ring home for a test drive, there’s a way around this. When you decide on a certain model, find an affordable ring with a similar profile and setting and wear it for a while. Even a costume-jewelry ring will do, the closer it is to your chosen design, the more insightful the experience. A few days of this exercise will reveal more than anything else could.
