What is a Diamond Cut?
A common misconception is that a cut refers to the shape of a diamond. Actually, this term represents the overall design of the diamond, including the arrangement and proportions of its facets and how the stone interacts with light. Only round brilliant cut diamonds are graded for their cut, as they have a standardized facet pattern. Other diamond shapes, such as marquise, emerald, pear, oval, hearts, and even triangles, are categorized as fancy shapes. The better the cut, the better your diamond will look.

What Does Ideal Cut Diamond Mean?
The concept of ideal cut for round diamonds was pioneered by the Polish engineer, mathematician, and gemologist Marcel Tolkowsky in the early 20th century. Through meticulous research, he outlined three factors that contribute to a diamond’s qualities and appearance: fire, brilliance, and sparkle.
- Fire is the rainbow-like display of spectral colors caused by the diamond’s ability to disperse light.
- Brilliance refers to the intensity of white light that reflects back from the crown of the diamond.
- Sparkle, also known as scintillation, is the play of light as it flashes and dances across the diamond’s facets.
Ideal Cut Diamond’s Proportions
Tolkowsky developed a set of proportions for an ideal cut of round diamonds based on his findings, however, he didn’t give specifications for diamond’s girdle:
- Table diameter: 52.4% to 57.5%
- Crown Angle: 33.7 degrees to 35.8 degrees
- Girdle Thickness: Thin to Slightly Thick (.51% to 2.95%)
- Pavilion Angle: 40.2 degrees to 41.25 degrees
- Culet: None (Pointed) to Medium
- Total Depth: 56.88% to 63.92%
Today, Tolkowsky’s concept has developed and branched out, but his work remains a cornerstone of modern diamond cutting. Various organizations have their own specifications for certifying and grading diamonds.
GIA on Ideal Cut Diamond Proportions
Whenever we need to know the facts about diamonds, it’s best to see what the world’s most respected authorities have to say. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the best place to start looking for information. After all, the GIA is the world’s leading organization in certifying diamonds, so no institution has a greater knowledge of what makes an ideal diamond.
The GIA Cut Grading System assesses the quality of a round brilliant diamond’s cut on a five-point scale ranging from Excellent to Poor. This grading system evaluates how the diamond appears when viewed from above, considering its brightness, fire, and scintillation. It also assesses the diamond’s design for durability and optimal weight, as well as the quality of the craftsmanship involved in aligning and polishing its facets.

Interestingly enough, the GIA does not certify any diamond as having an ideal cut. The organization does not consider the proportions of a diamond to be the only thing reflecting the true quality of the stone. Jaume Labro, a GIA-trained gemologist, agrees with this point of view. Many of the round brilliants we find on the market today are not ideal cut diamond dimensions, yet they have all the brilliance and fire you could wish for. The bottom line? The ideal cut isn’t everything.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Ideal Cut Diamonds
Advantages
An ideal-cut diamond offers several distinct advantages. Its optimized proportions maximize the diamond’s ability to reflect and refract light, resulting in enhanced brilliance and fire. This captivating sparkle can make the diamond more visually appealing and desirable. Additionally, ideal-cut diamonds often command a higher price in the market due to their superior optical performance and desirability.
Drawbacks
While an ideal cut in round diamonds is often desirable, it’s important to remember that it’s not the only factor determining a diamond’s value and appearance. Other qualities like polish, symmetry, color, craftsmanship, and clarity also play significant roles. Beware of sellers who overemphasize the ideal cut proportions as the sole selling point. Many of these sellers may not fully understand what constitutes a truly perfect cut. While the cut is undoubtedly a factor in the diamond’s value, attributing the entire value solely to the cut is a questionable approach.

Choosing the Right Diamond For You
Science and engineering have modernized how we cut and appreciate diamonds today. Still, the skill and creativity that go into cutting the perfect diamond have been carried through the 21st century. While it’s true that a diamond cutter’s talents enhance the beauty of gemstones — and that some cutters have greater expertise — cut is only one of the factors to consider when choosing a diamond for a custom-made engagement ring or precious stones for a necklace.
Unless you have already set your heart on a diamond with this characteristic, don’t let anyone persuade you to choose an ideal cut diamond over one you like. The brilliance and fire of rare and beautiful diamonds do not rely on perfect diamond cut proportions alone. Differences between cuts will affect appearance, but in most cases, this will only be discernible when diamonds are viewed out of their setting using specialized equipment. A gem-quality diamond is a rare and beautiful stone of great value, regardless of whether it is an ideal cut.
